Reflecting on Paris 2024

The Olympic Games have been a significant part of my life, and Paris 2024 marked my eighth time experiencing them in various roles, from competing as an athlete to working in sports and serving as an Athlete Role Model. Each time, the Games offer a unique perspective and remind me of the incredible unity and resilience that sports inspire globally. Paris 2024 brought the Olympic spirit alive across France. It was truly a memorable event, one that I’m grateful to have been part of.

One of the standout aspects of these Games for me was the dedication of many people who worked tirelessly to make them successful. Seeing the Olympic spirit incorporated through the French culture, embraced by communities across the country, was inspiring. This wasn’t just about the athletes but also the volunteers, all 45,000, who gave their time and effort to make the event smooth and enjoyable for everyone involved. Their warmth and energy created an unforgettable atmosphere, and I have immense respect for each of them. Paris transformed into a vibrant hub of athletic prowess and international unity, all thanks to the contributions of these volunteers and the organizers behind the scenes.

Beyond the logistical efforts, the support and enthusiasm of the public created a unique atmosphere that made these Games special. Spectators filled the stands, and their support was felt by athletes from every corner of the world. This connection between athletes and spectators boosted the magic of the Olympics. Knowing that the crowd wasn’t just cheering for victory but also for the bravery of each competitor was really moving. In the events I had the chance to watch, I saw athletes pushing their limits, giving their best in an environment where the playing field was equal for everyone, regardless of background or previous accomplishments. This is the core of the Olympics, an equal ground for all to excel and push the boundaries of human potential.

The Games also revived memories of my own experiences as an athlete. Watching those determined athletes striving for excellence provoked something inside me. I might be on a break from competition now, focusing on my family, but there are days when it feels like I’ve paused, not retired. Paris 2024 was a gentle reminder of that part of me that still has a fierce passion for competing. Seeing the athletes’ stories grow, their ups and downs, felt like reliving parts of my own journey. I was reminded that, even though my priorities have shifted, the fire for competition hasn’t been fully extinguished. It’s just redirected, at least for now.

During the Games, I also had the opportunity to visit Châteauroux, a charming town around two and a half hours from Paris. Here, I spent time with athletes from the sport of shooting, which offered me a chance to dive deeper into a sport I knew little about. It was an enriching experience to hear their stories, understand the technicalities and challenges unique to their discipline, and learn about their needs inside and outside the competition. These conversations reminded me of the importance of support networks for athletes, and it was an honour to share information about the resources available through Athlete365 and the International Olympic Committee. These programs are designed to help athletes navigate their careers and lives beyond the sporting areas, which is valuable for their growth and well-being.

Leaving Paris 2024, I was filled with gratitude and inspiration. The memories I carry from this experience are some of the best yet, and I look forward to the next Olympic Games in Milano Cortina in 2026. Remarkably, the Opening Ceremony will take place on February 6, my son Nikolas’s birthday. This coincidence adds an extra layer of excitement as I anticipate another Olympic journey.

Paris 2024 has been an incredible reminder of why the Olympics hold a special place in my heart. They are not only a platform for athletes but also a global celebration of resilience, unity, and hope. Here’s to the memories made and the countless inspiring moments yet to come.
